The old LGC site was outdated and came across as very governmental and stiff. Landing on the site did not feel welcoming and it was hard to understand what LGC did. The navigation and site structure was also not intuitive to an outsider.

We did an exercise with the LGC team to understand the types of site users and their objectives. From the exercise we were able to identify key user groups and tailor the site structure to what content they seek.
We focused on crafting a digestible top level, with an emphasis on plain language. This would help to reduce cognitive load and direct users into the correct sections.

To further help direct people to the right content, we proposed a natural language tool. It would work to quickly surface deeper content or serve as a starting place for those not sure where to look. The user would first select a topic, then depending on the topic, further filtering options would load in. Depending on their selections, the user will be served some content suggestions.

Alongside the website rebuild, LGC also had their brand updated. The new brand moved away from standard government branding, introducing new colours and graphic devices. Incorporating their updated identity into the site was another key part in making it feel more accessible.

The scope for the project was quite limited, which posed the challenge of creating visual variation with only a few blocks. The key was to ensure blocks could work with images or without images. This allowed for variance whilst keeping the number of blocks down.

Through reworking the site structure, navigation, and visual design we made a successful first step towards a more friendly and easy to use site. Potential enhancements would include a bilingual menu to accommodate for more te reo and additional content blocks to support different types of content.
