Ayutthaya was the former capital of Thailand from the 14th to 18th century. The Ayutthaya Kingdom which centred around the city is considered as the precursor to modern-day Thailand.

Background
Icons of Ayutthaya is a personal project which aims to showcase some of the numerous historical temples that remain standing in Ayutthaya, Thailand. Having family ties to the city and visiting more times than I can remember, these temples have always been dear to me.
This project was a way for me to design a site following my own brief, and to also learn more about the history behind the temples. To keep the scope small, I framed the site around the most iconic temples (about 3-4). This is also where the name ‘Icons of Ayutthaya’ stems from.

Language & fonts
To reinforce their Thai identity, I incorporated Thai into the site through bilingual titles. I wanted the overall aesthetics to feel historical as well, so I opted for a Thai serif-font that used traditional loops seen in the Thai script. I then found an English serif-font that matched the aesthetics of my chosen Thai font.

Visual motifs
In traditional Thai architecture, indented corners are a common stylistic feature. Indented corners are when the corners of a rectangle are broken up into multiple recessed corners. This feature, along with stacked layers can be seen extensively in the temples in Ayutthaya.
These features were the inspiration for a recurring visual motif seen throughout the site. Various UI elements such as the menu button and stacked images mimic the recessed corners and vertical layers seen in the temples.

Texture
To add to the historical and time-worn aesthetics, I made use of photographic and vector textures. The textures were made using images I had taken of various temple wall faces.
Vector masks were also used to add a weathered effect to edges of sections and elements such as image tiles.

UI design
My aim with the UI design & layout was to be minimal and prioritise photography. When images are used, they are often large or act as background images which fill the viewport. Space is used generously to let elements breathe and to ensure a leisurely viewing experience.
Colours were kept neutral and to a minimum so as to not clash with the photography.
