Background

When the Commission was established, they had inherited a site that was not fit for their needs. With limited site functionality, they found themselves with a number of issues on both the content authoring and user experience side. The Commission sought to rebuild their site to address these issues. Working alongside the Commission, we had the following objectives: deliver a site that properly accommodated their publishing needs, and make content easier to find and easier to digest.

Understanding goals & users

In order to properly understand the Commission’s goals and site users, I facilitated an in-person workshop with key stakeholders. My objectives for the workshop were to understand their content admin and technical painpoints, broad project goals (the why) and their brand positioning. They had some existing user research done by another vendor, so I reviewed this with the client. The existing user research had categorised users in terms of occupation/demographics, so I worked with the client to reframe these into behavioural groups that I could more easily design for.

Functionality & information architecture

To nail down a list of features and page templates, I reviewed the client’s existing site and then drafted a list of possible items. Once I had a rough idea of features and pages, I collected visual examples of these and collated them into a workshop board that I would then walk through with the client in a workshop. In the workshop, the examples would serve as a starting point for discussion around details around how the client would like things to look and function. In the workshop I also did a prioritisation exercise to help narrow down essential items and ensure we stayed within scope.

For the information architecture, I also reviewed the client’s current site structure to identify any obvious issues. I then discussed these issues with the client in a final workshop, and drafted a new structure in collaboration with them.

Synthesis & review

The final step before proceeding with wireframes and designs was to synthesise my learnings from my workshops with the client. This involved grouping pain points and goals to identify themes, refining user groups, finalising and confirming features, and reviewing the draft IA. There were a few IA areas the client needed to resolve internally, so I also outlined these to them and provided recommendations on how to finalise it.

Visual design

Once wireframes were greenlit, I moved onto the visual design stage. This stage is when I applied branding, created a style guide and curated the design system for the site. During this process, I also did minor functional adjustments to accommodate specific requirements brought to light through refinement sessions.

Outcome

The new website is a great improvement from the old site, with features and functionality that properly support the Commission’s core functions and a refined user experience. The website design received positive feedback internally within the Commission as well as externally.
